What is hazardous waste?

Waste is considered hazardous if any of its properties make it harmful to human health or the environment. It includes construction and demolition waste like contaminated soil and wood, asbestos, glass and plastic; electronic waste such as fluorescent lighting, computer monitors and televisions; and industrial waste like solvents, paints, varnishes and oils. It also includes residue from other waste treatments.

With the Landfill Directive now in force the need for dedicated treatment and transfer facilities for hazardous waste has never been greater. Bans on the landfilling of liquids, new criteria for waste acceptance and the requirement for certain waste to be pre-treated all point to the need for specialist waste management.
